what is yacht rock?
it’s less a genre, more a feeling. a commercial sensibility with serious musical chops. yacht rock is defined by its smooth, meticulous production, blending elements of r&b, jazz, and funk into a polished soft-rock sound. expect immaculate vocal harmonies, rhodes electric pianos, intricate basslines, and the occasional sax solo. it’s aspirational music for captains of industry and captains of small sea-faring vessels alike.
a brief history of smooth
the original wave crested in the late '70s and early '80s, primarily out of southern california. session musician culture was at its peak, with studio wizards crafting pristine sounds for artists like steely dan, toto, and michael mcdonald. it was a reaction against the grit of punk and the excesses of stadium rock, retreating into the hermetically-sealed environment of the professional recording studio to create something immaculate, soulful, and deeply catchy.
